Beyond the Baton Participants 2018
Laura Asenas is currently the Assistant Conductor for the Westlakve Village Symphony and a Conductor for the CSUN Youth Orchestras program . She has a Masters degree in orchestral conducting from California State University of Northridge under the baton of Dr. John Roscigno and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance in violin from California Lutheran University studying with Melissa Phelps. Laura Asenas is also a freelance violinist/violist in the Los Angeles area, and a respected teacher.
Thomas Taylor Dickey is the Director of Orchestral Studies at Oklahoma State University, where he conducts the OSU Symphony Orchestra . He concurrently serves as Music Director & Conductor of the OSU Youth Orchestra and the Stillwater Community Orchestra. Prior to his appointments in Oklahoma, he was the Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Music Director & Conductor of the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra (IA).
A native of Illinois, Thomas holds doctoral and master’s degrees in orchestral conducting from the University of Georgia and Louisiana State University, respectively. He has worked with conductors such as Carl Topilow, Christopher Zimmerman, Daniel Lewis, Gustav Meier, and Diane Wittry, and further studied conducting in numerous workshops and master classes.
Lisa M. Foltz, holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from The Florida State University, and Bachelors degrees in Music from Jacksonville University. Mrs. Foltz is Music Director and Conductor of Rose City Symphonic Band, Co-Conductor of Tallahassee “Arioso” Orchestra and Associate Conductor of Capital City Band. For three seasons she was Associate/Assistant Conductor for Big Bend Community Orchestra.
Lucy Ginther holds degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music and Wichita State University. Ms. Ginther has served on faculties of Oklahoma City University, Marshall University and Wright State University, as well as serving as director of the Middletown Youth Symphony for ten years. At Ohio Wesleyan University, Ms. Ginther is professor of violin, string methods and appreciation of music literature.
Yutaka Kono, the Artistic Director of the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, also serves as the conductor of Vermont Youth Philharmonia and the Director of Orchestra/Associate Professor of Music at the University of Vermont. Prior to moving to Vermont, he was the Assistant Conductor of the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra (TX). Dr. Kono previously taught at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, The University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and The University of Texas at Austin.
Felipe Morales-Torres currently serves as Assistant Conductor for the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras, which was a feature ensemble at the 2016 Ohio Music Education Association Professional Conference. As an educator-conductor, he has participated in collaborations with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Sphinx Virtuosi.. He studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and will return to CCM to begin a masters programs in orchestral conducting in August 2017.
Martin Villancourt is a violinists and conductor studying at McGill University, Canada. He is actively pursuing a career as a professional Symphony conductor.
