Workshop:
Programming, Creating, Scripting,
Developing Youth and Family Concerts

Mini-Course taught
by Diane Wittry

The job of a Music Director and Conductor with a regional orchestra or Assistant Conductor with a regional or professional orchestra often involves programming and conducting the Youth and Family Concert series, and yet very little training is offered in this area.  For these “school-time” concerts the students are bused to the concert hall for a 45-50 minute concert. Usually the students range in ages from 7-12 years old (2nd – 5th grade) or sometimes, one specific grade is targeted.  Usually these concerts have educational materials that are distributed in advance to the teachers to help prepare the students.

Join Diane Wittry for  four intensive sessions on “Developing Youth & Family Concert Programs.”  By the end of this mini-course, participants will have designed between 1 to 3 Youth and Family Concert programs, complete with the musical program, orchestra cue sheets, scripts and powerpoint, and educational booklet outlines.

Topics covered will include:

  • Selecting an Educational Theme
  • Selecting the Music
  • Tying into the State and National standards
  • Writing the Script
  • Developing your powerpoint
  • Preparing cue sheets for the Orchestra
  • Educational booklets and support materials

Enrollment is limited and will be done on a first come basis.

This mini-course will take place through Zoom on four Tuesday evenings in March.
